“Time is our scarcest resource and unless it is managed nothing else can be managed.”

This timeless quote from Peter Drucker is a lesson we all learned when we got our first job that paid by the hour. Our income was capped based on the time we have in a day.

Is time an issue for you?

When I ask leaders, what is the one thing they wish they had more of, the most common answer is time.  More time in their day, in their weekend, and more time in their life.  They don’t have the time for the most important priorities in their life.

During the week it seems like it is 3 pm before we know it and we haven’t even made a dent in what we wanted to get done that day. On the weekend, it is Sunday night and we are preparing for another week. Or another birthday passes us by. We all would love more time.

One of the most common reasons given by leaders on why they do not have a plan for their business, career or life is that they do not have time.  They are too busy getting their day to day work completed. The irony of this situation is that taking time to plan opens more time for you.

The most effective time you have is the time you plan out. When you plan out your day you get more done, and in fact make more time for other priorities in your life.  That same result transfers to your business and life as well.  When you have a plan for your business, your career and your life you will have more time for what’s important.

How can planning help you create more time?

As humans, we tend to get distracted from the important by what is urgent. Planning helps us eliminate what is not important, as a result creating more time.  We should take the time to make plans because it will give us more time to do the other things that we enjoy. Developing a 2019 plan for your business and life will create more time for you, not less.

I was at a wedding recently, talking with the bride and groom. They said they had spent over a year planning their wedding. Think of the time we spend planning our weekends, weddings, vacations, or our retirement. Ironically, many of us don’t plan for the one thing that is going to pay for all of that: our business and our career.

But planning can be so arduous…

I think many of us tend to make planning more complicated than it needs to be. We think it is going to take too much of our time. But it does not have too.  That’s why we have devised a simple complimentary one-page worksheet to get you started to create more time in your business and life. (download at www.smadvisors.com)

The strategy worksheet for your business or department will only take a few hours for you and your team to complete. Completing the worksheet will save you time and help keep you focused on what is important to help your business succeed.

The strategy worksheet for your life will take only a little bit of time to create a legacy for your life and the goals to take the first step in achieving it.   Your worksheet will focus your time on what is important in your life.

It is a proven fact that you get more done when you have it written down and review it consistently. For example, at SM Advisors and Stop The Vanilla, we have our current goals and action plans written down on just a few pages. We review those goals and action plans to work “on” the business every two weeks. Then, every six months, we complete the worksheet again and define new goals and five action plans to take the next step in building SM Advisors and the Stop the Vanilla Platform.

Time is our scariest resource as every day we have less of it on earth. Do you want more time for your organization, career and life? Then complete a worksheet for your business and life to create more time for what is important to you.  My time is up on this article.  Remember, those who plan – have more time.
